Fordham GSB

Today

Today, Fordham is at a turning point, focused on the present and poised for a future filled with bright possibilities.

When you stand in our plaza at the Fordham Graduate School of Business—looking up at the towering office buildings that surround us—it’s hard to not feel a sense of excitement knowing you’re at the epicenter of international commerce.

What is equally exciting is the realization of how far our institution has come in its brief history.  And how we are today an integral part of this vital landscape—a natural resource for the New York region’s business community.

In this section of our 25th Anniversary Report, we’d like to highlight our current academic programs, profile our student body and introduce some of our outstanding faculty—each a critical element of our management education community.

The Academic Program

After 25 years of progress, Fordham's MBA program today is one of great substance. Focused on business fundamentals, we're also taking risks and exploring new directions designed to keep pace with the future.

Small classes, top tier faculty and a balance between hands-on experience and sound academic theory characterize our program. We're known in New York and the surrounding region as a quality MBA program that serves the diverse educational needs of our students.

As an MBA program we're pragmatic, yet understand the importance of sound theoretical knowledge. Delivering course work that establishes core competency among our students in fundamental areas of businessfinance, accounting, Information and Communications Systems, Management, Marketing and others—is priority one.

 Areas of Academic Distinction

Our Finance Department continues to be one of our program strengthsnot surprising given our location amidst some of the world's largest banks, stock brokerage firms and other financial institutions. Our strategy has been to attract top academic and practitioner talent to our classrooms, while also establishing significant field study opportunities for our students.

Through this approach, we've been able to develop an impressive degree of depth to our finance major. Our students received world class education in fields such as corporate financial management, investment management, management of financial institutions, international finance and real estate finance.

Our majors in accounting and taxation also offer students superior education in these important areas of business. In addition to offering a wide array of course work taught by leading faculty and practitioners, our special MBA in Taxation and Accounting (MTA) Program offers students an in-depth learning opportunity in these areas unavailable at most MBA programs nationwide.

The unique value of Fordham's program in this area has been confirmed in the marketplace. Employment of MTA graduates continues at 100 percent, with starting salaries 5 to 20 percent above the norm.

An Array of Innovative Special Programs

Our MBA in Communications and Media Management and other special programs in Legal and Ethical Studies, a joint JD/MBA program and a variety of certificate programs also afford students opportunities for advanced exploration of diverse business subjects.

A unique special programThe Deming Scholars MBA Programhas attracted both national and international recognition. The program provides an opportunity for students to examine the business management principles of Dr. W. Edwards Deming, which form the foundation of "quality management" revolution, through an intensive 18-month, full-time program.

The Deming program had the special advantage of the personal involvement of Dr. Deming as a senior program adviser. Before his death in 1993, Deming met with students enrolled in the program and provided guidance and support regarding the future direction of this one-of-a-the kind educational offering.

An Emerging International Focus

As part of our mission to become a "global bridge" for the New York region's business community, we have also intensified our institution's focus on international issues.

The most significant new direction for our MBA Program is a strategic move toward internationalizing our entire curriculum. Based on a recognition that business has forever become a global enterprise, we have infused international perspectives into all of our course work. We've also created an International Business Specialization, allowing students to expand their knowledge of global business through a battery of international courses.

Through a variety of international linkages, our faculty view firsthand the business challenges unique to other parts of the world, bringing "hands-on" international experiences back to that Fordham classroom. Our latest partnership, with Beijing International Management Center, will bring together faculty from Fordham and other American business schools to offer an internationally recognized MBA degree in China. The degree will be granted by the Fordham Graduate School of Business.

For students pursuing careers specifically in international business, we've created a new mechanism to move them well beyond the classroom and into direct contact with the global marketplace.

The Fordham Graduate School of Business is proud to announce that in the Fall of 1996 we launched the Global Professional MBA (GP-MBA) Program as a distinct course of study.

This globalized program admits small groups of 30 students who move through the 78-credit program as a team. They take a broad core of general business in international courses, plus intense courses in areas such as business foreign language, cross-cultural management, global business strategy and others.

Most exciting is the "international experience" options we integrated into the program. Students in the GP- MBA Program encounter one of a variety of international experiences such as an overseas exchange program, an overseas or domestic-based international internship, team consulting with a multi-national corporation or an incompany international project is employed full-time.
