Ownership and market asymmetries in digital transformation. Electronic

Abstract: The book industry is undergoing a digital transformation
enabled by the Internet and e-book technology, which offers a novel channel
for delivering books to consumers who mostly purchase paper books from
physical or online bookstores. With a game theory model that introduces the
concepts of paper book market asymmetry and e-book market asymmetry, we
examine how the entry of an e-book seller affects strategic interaction in
the book markets and impacts sellers and consumers. We show that market
asymmetries, ownership of the e-book seller, and consumers’ preferences for
e-books are important determinants of prices, market shares and total book
readership. We find that prices in the book market may increase after the
e-book entry. Total readership may decrease after e-book entry, if the e-book
seller is owned by one of the paper book sellers. The lowest total readership
occurs when the online paper book seller owns the e-book seller. Keywords: Product differentiation; E-books; Book industry;

disruptive-innovation strategy. forthcoming[Abstract][Journal website]
Overview
Prof.
Katsamakas' research program analyzes the business and economic impact of IT
and the Internet, focusing on technology
platforms, networks,
and open source software. His methodological expertise includes IS
economics (game theory and econometrics), and dynamic simulation of complex
systems.
Prof.
Katsamakas has been an Associate Editor for the International Conference on Information
Systems (2007,
2009, 2010), a referee for multiple journals (Information Systems Research,
Management Science, Journal of MIS, Production and Operations Management,
etc.) and a regular participant at the Workshop on IS and Economics (WISE). He served as guest-editor of
the System
Dynamics Review special
issue "Dynamics
of IS" (Fall
2008) and organized the Complex IS Dynamics and
Strategic Performance research
workshop (June 2007, NYC). He was also invited expert panelist at the United
Nations conference on the "Development impact of open source
software" (October 2007, NYC).
Business impact of Open Source Software
The first research stream of Prof. Katsamakas' research focuses on
the economics and strategy of Open Source Software (OSS). This
research analyzes competition of open source and proprietary technologies,
innovation incentives, OSS development process, OSS adoption, and the
strategic value of OSS in Healthcare. It also examines implications of open
source beyond software.
