General Overview
  • The investment research competition sponsored by the New York Society of Security Analysts is divided into two phases.
  • The first phase involves participation in three seminars which will address the preparation of an Initiating Coverage, 'Sell Side of the Street', investment research report. Following the seminars, students will be invited to formally apply for the investment research team consisting of five Fordham students which will represent Fordham University in the second phase of the competition.
  • The second phase of the competition begins on Friday, October 22nd and is a research report writing/defending contest involving investment research teams from sixteen New York area universities: Fordham, New York University, Columbia, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Pace, Baruch, St. John's, Yale, ...

Inter-University Competition Participation Rules
  • Students may not have been or currently be employed in a role whose primary duty involves fundamental company analysis; with the exception of students who have been interning in that function for six months or less.
  • Students must be enrolled in the current term at the school they represent for the length of the Challange.
  • CFA Charterholders are not elgible to participate.
  • Teams may consist of 3-5 members, and may include graduate and/or undergraduate students.
  • Students must disclose any ownership position in the securities of the subject company.
  • Students must confirm that their participation in the Challenge does not represent a conflict of interest.
   
Within-Fordham Phase
  • Here at Fordham there will be three seminars led by practitioner investment analysts (see details below). The first seminar will address the Valuation Section of the Investment Research Report that will be prepared in the Inter-University Competition. The second seminar will address the Financial Analysis Section of the report. And the third seminar will address the Investment Thesis, the Competitive Advantage, and the Investment Risks Sections of the report. During the second week of October, interviews will be scheduled and five team members will be selected along with two alternates which will represent Fordham in the inter-university competition.

How to apply to be a member of the Fordham Team in the Inter-University Competition and the Equity Research Club!
  • Team member application Deadline: October 15, 2010
  • Please prepare an application in the format of a letter which addresses the following three issues:
    1. Which of the following primary responsibilities would you like to assume for the team:
      1. Investment Thesis Section and Chief Compiler/Editor of the Investment Research Report
      2. Valuation Section
      3. Financial Analysis Section
      4. Competitive Advantage and Business Description Section
      5. Investment Risks Section and "Differentiating Research Perspective"
    2. Explain how that being a member of the team would contribute to your career objectives.
    3. Identify personal skills and experiences that will enable you to contribute to the success of the team. (Be sure to identify and explain any experience you have had using Discounted Cash Flow Models.)
  • Please include a copy of your current resume. (Be sure it includes a list of relevant Finance and Accounting courses that you have taken or are taking.)

Equity Research Club Timeline:
  • October 18th-Monday (by 6:00pm) teams to be announced
  • October 20th-Wednesday, 5:00 to 5:45pm, Room 506, team organizing meeting wherein each team determines the company to be the subject of their investment research report
