MBA Under Siege; Reimagining Management Education

Everyone holding an MBA degree today is painfully aware that, in the wake of the recent financial crisis, the prestige of this once sterling credential is tanking fast. Fordham alum will be pleased to know that GBA isn’t just standing by watching the slide. It’s fighting back.
On May 11, GBA hosted the first of what is expected to be a series of annual one-day Deming Memorial Conferences directed towards modernizing management education and getting the MBA degree back on track. This conference, MBA Under Siege: Reimagining Management Education , was attended by nearly one hundred- fifty management educators, students, and other stakeholders who came from New York, City but also a dozen other states and more than a half dozen countries to hear four superstar management scholars and participate in the discussion. Keynote speakers included: Michael C. Jensen : Jesse Isidor Straus Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, Harvard Business School. R. Edwards Freeman : Elis and Signe Olsson Professor of Business Administration, Darden Business School, University of Virginia and Academic Director, Business Roundtable Institute for Corporate Ethics. Henry Mintzberg : Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies, Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University. Rakesh Khurana : Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development at the Harvard Business School. Andrea Gabor, Bloomberg Professor of Business Journalism at Baruch College, CUNY provided opening comments. Session moderators included Art Kleiner, managing editor of Business and Strategy; Kelley Holland, staff writer for the New York Times, and Julia Kirby, Editor, Harvard Business Review. Videotapes of the conference will be available for your viewing pleasure on the Fordham Library website by May 24. We hope to have fully edited copies uploaded on YouTube sometime in July.
