Awards, Conferences, and Publications
From just this newsletter alone, it is clear that our faculty is winning awards at preeminent conferences and being published in respected journals all over the globe. Please let us know if one of your papers is accepted by a journal, if a book is selected for publication, or if you are recognized with an award for your scholarly research - or even your personal volunteer efforts. Paul Baard
Baard presented “Coaches’ Communication Style and Team Performance” at the Self-determination Theory International Conference. He was also interviewed on the The Charlie Rizzo Show on the topic of Communication and Motivation.

John Carey
Carey’s article “The Path To Ultrabroadband: Lessons From Consumer Behavior” appeared in Vol 27, Number 1 of Broadband, and “Expressive Communication and Social Conventions in Virtual Worlds” is forthcoming in the ACM Database Journal.
Carey has been invited to lecture at the New School and NBC/U twice this calendar year, as well as at Columbia Business School and NY Law School. In his spare time, Carey is an advisor to the Adult Literacy Media Alliance, the Annenberg School, University of Pennsylvania, and Sony Children's Museum.

Sris Chatterjee
With An Yan, Chatterjee co-wrote “Using Innovative Securities under Asymmetric Information: Why do some firms pay with contingent value rights?” which was accepted for publication by the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
In addition, Chatterjee participated in the Financial Management Association Meeting in October as both a Session Chair/Discussant and as a presenter: “Revisiting the Momentum Puzzle: Some Unique Evidence on Momentum and Monthly Return” with co-author Nusret Cakici.

Katherine Combellick
At the Association for Business Communication annual meeting, Combellick presented “Experiential Learning and Communication Style: International Service Learning in Kenya." She has consulted with two Kenyan small businesses, partnered with SERRV International (a nonprofit which markets third world products), and presented at K-Rep Bank and Equity Banks in Nairobi about microfinance partnerships with Fordham.

Everette Dennis
Studies in Communication Sciences published Dennis’ "Economics of Journalism in the October issue. Dennis also contributed the "Gannett Center for Media Studies, 1984-98" section to the new, three-volume in Encyclopedia of American Journalism History.
At two recent conferences, Dennis was a Strategic Planning Group Panelist at the Association for Journalism & Mass Communication annual meeting and the Keynote speaker at the McCormack Tribune Conference on the future of news media education.

Shoshana Dobrow
After only one year as a professor, Dobrow (Management) received a number of research awards at major international research conferences over the summer. In August, her paper “The Development of Calling: A Longitudinal Study of Musicians” received Best Paper, Careers Division and Best Paper Based on a Dissertation, Careers Division at the Academy of Management Conference in Philadelphia. The paper was also one of three top finalists for the Academy’s William H. Newman Award, which is the All-Academy award for best paper based on a dissertation across all divisions. The Academy of Management is considered the pre-eminent international conference for management scholars.
At July’s European Group for Organizational Studies Conference in Vienna, Dobrow was awarded Winner of Best Paper, Careers Stream for the same paper. It was also nominated for the conference Best Paper Award; which will be announced at the July 2008 conference in Amsterdam. The European Group for Organizational Studies Conference is the pre-eminent European management conference and attracts international attendance.

John Fortunato
Fortunato co-wrote “A communication plan for autism and its applied behavior analysis treatment: A framing strategy” with Jeff Sigafoos & Lisa Morsillo-Searls; it was published in Child and Youth Care Forum’s volume 36. With Jef Richards, Fortunato wrote “Reconciling sports sponsorship exclusivity with antitrust law,” which was included inVolume 8 of the Texas Review of Entertainment & Sports Law.

Wei Gao
“An Interest Support Based Subspace Clustering Approach to Predicting Repurchases” Gao co-wroten with Zhuo Yang and Olivia Sheng, was accepted for presentation at the Seventeenth Annual Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems.

Al Greco and Robert Wharton
Greco and Wharton received one of four 27th annual National Jesuit Book Awards for their book, The Culture and Commerce of Publishing in the 21st Century (Stanford Business Books, 2007), co-authored with Clara E. Rodríguez.
About The Culture and Commerce of Publishing in the 21st Century, the Editor-in-Chief of Publishers Weekly wrote, “This thorough and engrossing book explains everything about the book business in a way that will satisfy "insiders" and "civilians" alike… Anybody who has ever bought a book should now buy this one.”

Hooman Estelami
Estelami’s book titled Marketing Financial Services was published by Dog Ear Publishing, LLC. Russell S. Winer, Deputy Dean and Professor of Marketing at the Stern School of Business said “Estelami combines an excellent knowledge of marketing literature with a deep understanding of financial services. The combination is a very effective and contemporary book on marketing financial services.” Estelami was asked to be Guest Editor of the International Journal of Bank Marketing special issue on Emerging Views on Marketing Financial Services and co-hosted a conference at Fordham on the Marketing of Financial Services.
Estelami also co-wrote “The Negative Effect of Policy Restrictions on Consumers’ Post-Purchase Reactions to Price-Matching Guarantees,” with Dhruv Grewal and Anne Roggeveen, and it has been accepted by the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. As well, the Journal of Services Marketing has accepted “An Exploratory Study of the Predictive Relationship between Employee Turnover and Customer Satisfaction,” co-written with Robert F. Hurley.

John Finnerty
Finnerty contributed two chapters to the Handbook of Corporate Finance, Chapter 35: “Securities Innovations” and Chapter 40: “Real Options.” Finnerty and Mary Kuan co-authored "When the Insurance Regulators Sneeze, the Hybrid Market Can Catch a Cold" which was published in the Summer issue of Journal of Insurance Regulation.
In addition to writing, Finnerty is also Editor of “FMA Online,” Associate Editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management and Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Finance.

Sertan Kabadayi
Kbadayi co-authored “The Performance Implications of Designing Multiple Channels to Fit with Strategy and Environment” with Nermin Eyuboglu and Gloria P. Thomas. The research paper was included in Vol. 71 of the American Marketing Association’s Journal of Marketing.

Evangelos Katsamakas
Katsamakas was the Program chair at the Complex IS Dynamics Conference in June and the Associate Editor for the International Conference on Information Systems. He was also an invited “Expert Panel” participant on the topic of “The Development Impacts of FOSS (Free/Open Source Software)” at a UN Conference in October.
Katsamakas’ paper “Knowledge processes and learning options in networks: evidence from telecommunications” was published in Human Systems Management 26(3). “Disruptive innovation strategy effects on hard-disk maker population: a system dynamics study," co-written with N. Georgantzas is included in Information Resources Management Journal, 20(2). “A System Dynamics model of Open Source Software Development” was included in the Proceedings of 50th Systems Dynamics Society Conference, and “Why most open source development projects do not succeed?” was included in the Proceedings IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering. Both were co-written with Georgantzas.

Sharon Livesey
Livesey delivered a paper with Julie Graham titled "Transforming the Firm: Corporate Eco-Talk and Eco-Collaboration" at the International Communication Association (ICA) annual meeting. At the Academy of Management annual meeting she delivered a paper entitled "Doing 'Good' in California’s Sacramento Valley—The Changing Landscape of American Farming.” Finally Livesey and co-author, Molly Shearer delivered "Nor Any Drop to Drink? An Exploration of the U.S. Water Privatization Debate” at the Association for Business Communication annual meeting.
Livesey received the 2007 Gladys and Henry Crown Award for Faculty Excellence/Fordham GBA. In addition, her Organization & Environment article (with Kate Kearins) titled "Transparent and Caring Corporations" was the most frequently accessed O&E article from January 1, 2006 through May 31, 2007.

James R. Lothian
Lothian is currently on sabbatical; he is presently a Visiting Scholar at the Limburg Institution Limburg Institute of Financial Economics at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. His paper "Real Exchange Rates over the Last Two Centuries: How Important Is the Harrod-Balassa-Samuelson Effect?" was accepted for publication in the Economic Journal.
Lothian was also invited to lecture on "The Behavior of Prices and Nominal Exchange Rates across Exchange-Rate Regimes: Three Natural Experiments" at the International Conference on Macroeconomic Analysis and International Finance. Lothian presented “Irving Fisher, Expectational Errors and the UIP Puzzle” at the INFINITI Conference on International Finance. In November, he will make an invited presentation on “Financial History in Historical Perspective” at a conference on “Financial Integration and its Implications,” jointly sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Cambridge and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Pam Moulton
A paper co-written by Moulton received the 2007 Best Paper in Market Microstructure award at Financial Management Association International (FMA)’s recent conference. The paper “Market Maker Inventories and Liqudity” was co-written by University of California Berkeley professors Terrence Hendershott and Mark Seasholes.
In addition, Molton’s paper "Liquidity: Considerations of a Portfolio Manager" has been accepted for publication by Financial Management. Her co-author was Laurie Simon Hodrick of Columbia University. Moulton was also invited to present at University of Utah in April, the New York Stock Exchange in September and the Financial Management Association and the National Bureau of Economic Research in October. She will present at the American Finance Association in 2008.

Philip Napoli
Napoli and co-author J. Karaganis published “Toward a federal data agenda for communications policymaking” in CommLaw Conspectus: The Journal of Communications Law & Policy, 16(1). With co-author S. Sybblis. Napoli published “Access to the media versus access to audiences: The distinction and its implications for electronic media regulation and policy” in the Virginia Journal of Law and Technology, 12(1).
At three recent meetings, Napoli presented papers: at the American Library Association annual meeting, “Commercial Data Access and Communications Research: Toward a Communications Data Consortium;” at the Department of Communications, University of Helsinki “Media Reform as a Social Movement: Past, Present, and Future;” and at the Montreal Media Policy Group, “The Politics of Research and the Politics of Data in U.S. Communications Policymaking.”

RP Raghupathi
Raghupathi had a series of publications over 2007. “Exploring an MDA approach to developing information systems in health care,” co-written with A. Umar, was published in the International Journal of Medical Informatics in June. “An Open Source Approach to Health Information Technology Development,” co-written with W. Gao, was accepted by the International Journal of Electronic Healthcare and appeared in Vol. 3, No. 4. The e-Service Journal published “Interoperable Electronic Health Records Design: Towards a Service-Oriented Architecture,” co-written with S. Kesh in their Summer 2007 edition. “Exploring a UML Profile Approach to Modeling Web Services in Health Care,“ with Gao, was printed in the International Journal of Healthcare Information Systems and Informatics Vol. 2, No. 2. Finally, Raghupathi’s “Corporate Governance of Information Technologies: A Framework for Development,” was accepted by Communications of the ACM Vol. 50, No. 8.
Raghupathi holds editorial positions on both the International Journal of Healthcare Information Systems and Informatics (where he is a Co-Editor) and the International Journal of Information Technologies and the Systems Approach (where he is a Senior Member of the Editorial Review Board).

Travis Russ
Communication Education published Russ’ “Addressing college drinking through curriculum infusion in the communication classroom: A study of the use of an experiential learning intervention” (with L. C. Lederman and L. P Stewart). Leadership and Organization Development Journal published “Evaluating the impact of organizational self-assessment in higher education: The Malcolm Baldrige/Excellence in Higher Education framework,” which Russ co-wrote with B.D. Ruben, S. M. Smulowitz, and S. L. Connaughton. Finally, Russ’ “Casting agency: Exploring the communicative consequences of prejudging on interpersonal relationships” was published by Communication Teacher.
Russ’ paper “The influence of communication apprehension and learning styles on employees' evaluations of an experiential change program” received a Top Four Paper Award in the Applied Communication Division at the National Communication Association annual meeting. His paper “A critical analysis of planned and participatory communication strategies for implementing planned organizational change” was presented at the Association for Business Communication annual meeting.

Sinan Tan
Tan’s co-author Anthony Lynch, NYU, presented their paper "Explaining the Magnitude of Liquidity Premia: The Roles of Return Predictability, Wealth Shocks and State-dependent Transaction Costs" at Yale University School of Management in October. "Labor Income Dynamics at Business Cycle Frequencies: Implications for Portfolio Choice," also written with Lynch, was accepted into the American Finance Association’s 2008 Annual Meeting.

Amjad Umar
Umar received a Fulbright Senior Specialist award from the US Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) to help overseas institutions develop new academic programs and improve the current ones in telecommunications, information security and enterprise architectures.
During 2007, Umar also had four papers accepted for publication. “Intelligent Decision Support for Architecture and Integration of Next Generation Enterprises” was in Infomatica Journal in August, 2007. “Exploring an MDA Approach to Healthcare Information Systems Development,” co-written with W. Raghupathi, was accepted for publication by the International Journal of Medical Informatics. “An Enterprise Ontology for eBusiness,” co-written with A. Zordan, was accepted for publication by IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. IEEE Security and Privacy has also accepted “ Security Design for the Next Generation Enterprises” for publication.

Yan will soon have two papers published in distinguished journals. "Using Innovative Securities under Asymmetric Information: Why do Some Firms Pay with Contingent Value Rights?", co-written with Sris Chatterjee, will be published in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. "A Theory of Contractual Provisions in Leasing", co-authored with Thomas Chemmanur of Boston College and Yawen Jiao of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will be published in the Journal of Financial Intermediation.
