Dean's Update Congratulations to our 2008 graduates whose dedication and academic excellence have exceeded all our expectations. Many have taken active roles in the continued growth of the Fordham Graduate School of Business Administration, and we hope they – like many of our graduates – will come back to help guide our MBA/MS students. Many exciting and important initiatives have been percolating in the halls of Lowenstein, and I’d like to take the opportunity to talk about some of the more crucial ones. The first is our continued efforts to globalize the curriculum and encourage a “global mindset” within our student body. We feel it is crucial that our graduates understand the intricacies of managing multiple cultures and working with people from around the world. To reach our goal of being ‘world wise – world wide,’ we have instituted a stipend program that compensates faculty for integrating global components into their classes. This is the first time anything like this has been attempted at the graduate school, and we are eagerly awaiting proposals from our faculty. This is a crucial step in attaining our strategic goal of enhancing the international reach of our school. Along the same line, we have been talking a great deal about new international programs for our students. We are moving forward with two programs – a Masters in Global Finance at Peking University in China and a Masters in International Business at Kadir Has University in Turkey. As we finish up the work on these programs, we continue to meet with schools from India, Vietnam, Belgium, etc. to discuss potential new programs. Though we have our eyes on the international horizon, we continue to look for ways to improve our programs and services here in New York. Tom Monaco has settled into his role as Director of Career Services and Stephanie Cziczo has become a dedicated alumni and student group liaison. Together, they have reached out to alumni throughout the New York area to promote career recruitment for students and alumni. They have also started the World Wise Network’s Career Seminars dedicated to our alumni. We just finished the first three events with great success. Our World Wise Network – a career advancement organization – had its first networking event on April 2, and we were overwhelmed by the warm response and high attendance from our alums. Whenever the business cards fly by, I know an event was a success. Finally, I would like to talk about an important process through which the Schools of Business are going. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is the accrediting agency for business schools, and they will be here in January 2009 to review the school and our programs. They are requiring strict academic and professional standards for all faculty, and we are lucky that our faculty fit the requirements. However, we have had to make adjustments in the number of adjuncts professors used each term in an effort to meet the AACSB requirements. Though this is an unfortunate side effect of accreditation, we are determined to keep our adjuncts close to the schools through executive education, alumni seminars, lectures, and more. Our adjuncts are a precious resource to the schools, and we are grateful for everything they do for our students. We will continue to involve them in events throughout the year including focus groups, the welcome back luncheon, and coffee with the Dean. As you can see, there are a great many things happening at the business school. We are preparing for the 2008-2009 academic year while accessing the progress we’ve made in the 2007-2008 year. We have come a long way since I became Dean in the middle of 2006, but we have more goals and more initiatives to strive for and achieve as we continue to enhance the Graduate School of Business Administration for the benefit of our alumni, students and faculty. As always, we are delighted with your contributions this year and we encourage your continued, honest feedback and support. Warm regards,
